Where to eat and Stay

Our Catering Chair, Rebecca Alonzi, is planning some tasty bites and sweets for the night of the Ball, but suggests that while the Art Deco Preservation Ball is full of dancing, cocktails and entertainment, it is not a dinner event! You should plan to dine before the Ball and we have some very good selections for you in North Beach and close to Bimbos 365 Club (map).

Where to Eat

Bottle Cap

My pick for the evening is BottleCap a new restaurant in the location that for many years was Washington Square Bar and Grill. Located close to Bimbos at 1707 Powell (map) and open from 3:00 until 10:00 PM (make an early dinner so you wont miss a minute of the Ball!).

I found the interior quaint: red and white striped awnings, cute historical black and white San Francisco photos. I especially suggest the Scallops and Wild Rice Cake, the Slow Braised Pork Shoulder, Baby Greens salad and Fried Chicken Thighs with Dill Yogurt. You must have the Dark Chocolate Mousse with Brandied Cherry Whipped Cream! The portions are hearty and the pricing more than fair.

Original Joes

Another great choice for the night of the Ball would be Original Joe's, just three blocks down Columbus from Bimbos and located at 601 Union (map) right on Washington Square.

Original Joes, just like the Golden Gate Bridge, celebrating its 75th Anniversary! It, too, opened in 1937 (although at a different location in San Francisco). But they have moved the original signage, the classic menu that definitely harkens back to the feel of the 1930s, 40s, 50s with red leather booths, tuxedoed waiters serving traditional favorites: like marvelous Minestrone soup, Italian cuisine and hearty meat dishes.

Of course they are known for cocktails as well and this is a place the men will especially like so if they have indulged you, Milady, with a purchase of tickets to the Ball, why not give them a satisfying meal of steak and a martini to get them in a great mood before hand?

Original Joe's is open every day from 10:00 am until 10:00 pm

Fior D'Italia

Fior d' Italia, America's Oldest Italian Restaurant, has proudly served the citizens of and visitors to San Francisco since 1886. Located in the North Beach section of San Francisco in the historic San Remo Hotel, "The Fior" specializes in traditional Northern Italian cuisine and old world hospitality. A favorite of locals and visitors alike, the North Beach restaurant is the ultimate San Francisco dining experience. It has been said, "If you haven't dined at 'The Fior' you haven't been to San Francisco."

Just two blocks away from Bimbo's.

Ideale Restorante

Volunteer Director Greta Billinger has another favorite small place to share with you - Ideale Restorante at 1315 Grant Avenue (map). A cozy, small place with authentic Italian fare and amazing home made pastas.

Greta suggests "off the main drag, so not touristy! Ambient light, a good date spot, white table cloths, nice wine list, big plates of pasta, and reservations are still available for May 5th."
Call to reserve at 415-391-4129.

Meet Rebecca Jean Alonzi, Catering Chair

Of course, you probably have seen Rebecca at many an Art Deco Society Event as this marks her fifth year of participating with the ADSC. She has been a part of the Decobelle Dance Troupe, a Gatsby Picnic Lecturer and Picnic Judge.

During the past few years, she has grown her Catering Company
into something quite successful !

So this year, she will wear two hats (one of them a chef's hat, the other something glamorous no doubt) as she provides us with appetizers and works with Bimbo's as our Catering and Venue Chair. Her client list includes the Gap, Williams Sonoma, Glide Memorial, Academy of Art, Pottery Barn and many more
